The Room Project
2019-2025

The biggest project I've ever worked on, The Room Project is the name I've given to the transformation of my bedroom into an immersive Star Wars inspired space. There have been many changes throughout the years, but the core story has remained the same.

The Beginning...
August, 2019-December, 2020

At the beginning of the project, I enveloped my bed inside of a large framed wall piece, inspired by some bed-pods seen in various sci-fi films. I also made a cardboard droid, inspired by DJ R3X in Oga's Cantina in Disney's Hollywood Studios. I had a few other droids and cargo, but most of the room was yet to come

A Big Change...
February, 2021-April, 2021

After over a year of the bed pod, I decided it was time to change the layout of the room and remove the walls I built around the bed. With the change, the space opened up a lot and allowed me to do much more with the space. The walls that were around the bed were not scrapped; I attached them flat against the walls around the bed in its new place.

Adding Panels + Lights
May, 2021-June, 2022

Getting used to the new layout, I slowly added more wall panels and experimented with various forms of lights and sounds to help the immersion in the room. I also used an old fish tank to create a habitat for a "pet" that I bought during a trip to Disneyland in early 2022. The steps taken during this time would lay foundations for future generations of the Room Project.

Greeblies, Pipes, and Tubes
September, 2022-November, 2022

Now that I had a canvas, I began doing some detailing with greeblie panels, pipes, and tubes. These connected different parts of the room together, making a more cohesive design, but there were still many things that weren't satisfying with the room quite yet.

The Space Window
December, 2022-February, 2023

Next came another big project: A window into space. Since my room was meant to be part of a starship, it only made sense that there would be a window looking out. This was one of the first elements of my room project to incorporate geometry and mathematics to make an angled construction, and much would change on this piece over the coming years.

The Falcon Bench
August 2023

The final big element/change to the room came right before I left for college: The Millenium Falcon inspired corner bench. For years, the droid in the corner of my room, AC-3, had remained relatively untouched. While it was one of the few surviving original elements, I decided it was time to change. The Falcon bench took its place, and I'm very happy with how it came out.

The Future of the Room Project
Present

Once I left for college, the Room Project was pretty much finished. While I have added an element or two since, the majority of the project is officially done. So, what does that mean for the future? I firmly believe that I will continue to work on small elements, and I will come back and update this page as I do, but the project has come to a satisfying conclusion for me.

Since beginning this project, I have learned many new techniques for set fabrication. From using power tools, painting, lighting techniques, and prop placement, this project has easily been the biggest and most impactful one of my life so far.
