The Fossils
Project Date: June 2024, October 2024

Inspired by Jurassic Park, I made three different fossils that are all life size recreations of the actual dinosaurs.

The first one I made, seen below, is a raptor claw, which was more of a 3D fossil, while the other two are intended to be used as 2D wall art. The second two that I made have the same process, so only one process is shown below.

Painted Raptor Claw vs Raw Print
I printed two different claws, and left one unpainted to show the difference made by adding paint.
Creating the Set
As I wanted this fossil to be set in sandstone, I cut out a piece of 1/2" foam core and surrounded it by a craft ring before carving.
Painting the Sandstone
Taking reference from Colorado where these fossils would likely have been found, I painted the set with browns, oranges, and greys.
Finishing Touches
Once painted, I added bits of foliage and rock to finish the piece. I also printed and painted a small Jurassic Park logo to attach.
Fossil Box
For my second fossil, I wanted a life-size full skeleton. Before that, however, I made a display box.
The Compsognathus Skeleton
Tracing a real Compsognathus skeleton, with some small modifications for personal preference, I laser cut the skeleton and glued it down.
Adding the Sand
Mixing glue and water, I painted the mixture on and around the skeleton before shaking sand on. I repeated this process a few times
Sealing the Project
While the glue held most of the sand, I used multiple coats of both clear spray paint and spray glue to hold the whole thing together better
Finished Project
Dilophosaurus Skull
For my third fossil, I made a Dilophosaurus skull, which is size accurate to the Jurassic Park films.

Star Wars Radio
Project Date: June 2024

One of my more unplanned props, the Star Wars-Inspired radio is designed to be something you would see on the outer rim, in a workshop or household.

Originally a hotel pager, this prop ended up becoming a working bluetooth speaker when I stripped the old guts and put in new electronics.

The Original Hotel Pager
A "before" picture if you will, here is the raw piece before I paint and add my own greeblies.
Painted Piece
Using just two spray paints, I paint the model a dark grey with a blue stripe. After painting, I add the "speaker" element
Antenna + Buttons
Some details are now added, with the antenna and buttons painted. The buttons are lined up with the original pager buttons.
Close-Up Photo
Seen in the top right are the stencils used to paint the buttons.
Repainted Buttons
To add extra layers, I repainted the buttons to a different blue. This new color, I feel, fits better with the rest of the prop.
Weathering
The final step was to weather the piece, to give it the grime and grit that is known in the Star Wars galaxy.

Star Wars Explorer's Desk
Project Date: January 2025

To complete the theming of my sophomore year dorm room, I designed and fabricated a large wall panel that might go on an explorer's desk in the Star Wars universe.

Complete with display shelves, tactical display screens, and even a tablet slot, this desk piece is a great way to show off small props and provide a background for theming.

The Frame
Once I decided to get started on this project, the first step was creating a sturdy enough frame to put the skin onto.
Frame, Standing
Once the frame was glued and screwed, I stood it up to test its stability.
The Intended Location
Meanwhile, I prep my dorm desk for the new unit. I printed out the original plans for the piece, which changed slightly throughout creation.
Creating Panels, Pt. 1
I begin cutting MDF sheets into panels for the skin, to cover up the framing.
Creating Panels, Pt. 2
Two of the panels are made of 1/8" laser cut chipboard, which house the two tactical display screens. There is room behind them to add light
Creating Panels, Pt. 3
After I miscut one of the panels, I was forced to change it to MDF and later cut it by hand.
Painting Panels
With most of the panels made, I begin painting them with various greys. I also test the laser cut acrylic into the slots.
Testing Tablet Slot
Next, I fabricate the slot where my Samsung tablet will go. I cut holes into the laser cut chipboard to maintain access to the power button.
Painting + Spacing
Once most pieces are done, I do my next levels of painting and adding extra details.
Complete + Installed
With all panels finished and nailed down, I transport the piece back to my dorm and install it.
In the Dark No. 1
I use an LED strip to light up the tactical displays, and play videos off the tablet to finish the effect.
